The 548 photographs were collected or perhaps taken by S. Hall Young during his time in Alaska. Since he traveled throughout Alaska, the scenes are varied and include many formats, including photo postcards. Several sets of photographs appear to have been sent to him by missionaries in the field, although only a few, Whipkey in Council and Greist in Barrow, are identified. Although mostly not noted, the images probably date between 1890 and 1920. Subjects vary, but include missionary portraits, town scenes, hunting, children, Alaska Natives, cemeteries, and dog teams. Prominent personages in images include S. Hall Young and his wife, those involved with the Presbytery, including Edward Marsden (Metlakatla), David Waggoner (Juneau), Bishop Rowe, and Dr. Condit. Identified Alaska locations include Anchorage, Barrow, Cordova, Council, Craig, Eagle, Fairbanks, Glacier Bay, Haines, Hoonah, Howkan, Hydaburg, Iditarod, Juneau, Kake, Kasaan, Ketchikan, Klawock, Klinkwan, Knik, Matanuska, Metlakatla, Nenana, Nome, Ruby, Saxman, Seward, Sitka, Skagway, Tokeen, Valdez, Wrangell, Dawson (Yukon Territory). Two folders contain unidentified images, including some not taken in Alaska. Commercial photographers represented include Clemens, Lomen, Simmer, Winter & Pond, F.H. Nowell, P.S. Hunt, Cameron, E.A. Hegg, Kennedy, Case & Draper, William L. Paul, Jr., and Ordway.

Samuel Hall Young was born in Pennsylvania in 1847, educated at the University of Wooster and Princeton Theological Seminary and graduated from Western Theological Seminary in 1878. Ordained a Presbyterian minister in June 1878, he came to Wrangell, Alaska, where he married Fannie E. Kellogg and organized the first Presbyterian Church in Alaska.
